Labour Day ’09 – Don’t Let the Weather Bring You Down!

Mixed weather conditions made our 2009 Labour Day event at Wakefield Park certainly interesting, if not extremely fun!

In the days leading up to our annual Labour Day event, the rain was pouring non-stop up in Sydney, and Goulburn were having their wettest days this year. While some love the opportunity of a washed out event, most are a little cautious, especially if they want to set the lap times on fire.

So come Labour Day, and the weather granted us both opportunities – and boy was it interesting. One second it would be dry and sunny, hot even, and then the dark clouds would cover the track and a short burst of heavy rain would soak the track, giving the drivers plenty to think about.

In fact, it was probably the first event of ours whereby the track at times was dry through part of it, then wet on the other side of the circuit! Spa Francorchamps eat your heart out!

By far the funniest part of the day was when the fishhook became wet while the first half of the track was dry. You could hear all the spectators ooooohhh as cars entered the corner, mostly sideways, followed by a cheering hoorah as the driver either caught the slide, or slid right off the track. The hoorah’s were definitely louder for the latter.

The JDM Yard EG Civic ended up being the fastest car of the day, with a 1.08.9 lap time, on what was surely a slow track. Driven by Zi Tan, this car drew a lot of attention from it’s 2.4L engine conversion and it’s massive speed down the main straight. It’s very rare to see an all-motor Honda being as fast down the straight as it was through the corners!

Michael Mair’s BMW M3 was also an awe-inspiring machine. For a car to be completely stock and sound that good… And because it was stock, the way Michael drove the thing was crazy – you would have never seen so much roll, pitch and yaw all at the same time.

Lastly, the day happened to be one where the classics came out to play. William Lam’s 1976 VW Golf GTI looked so purposeful and was pretty quick for a car over 40 years old! Raphael also brought his 1973 Toyota Celica with pumped flares and Simon Rawther’s 1984 Alfa GTV sounded great too.

Make sure you check out the photos taken by a new photographer, Lisa Kudinar – not a bad effort for a first time at a Trackday! Additionally, if you want to check out the lap times, click here.

See you at the next event!
